Assessing Seedling Establishment for the Restoration of Mixed-Hardwood Forests in Former Pine Plantations

Project Overview
Research Core Areas:
Project Abstract:
To facilitate the transition from conifer plantation to a mixed-hardwood forest, land managers and landowners with limited resources need simple, inexpensive ways to improve survival of seedlings planted as part of a restoration effort. This study will compare the effects of local soil transplant, the application of biochar, and the application of prescribed burns on the survival and growth of hardwood seedlings in formerly-managed red pine plantation.
