Fitness Impact of Aphid Herbivory on Common Milkweed, Asclepias syriaca

Project Overview
Project Abstract:
Common milkweed is an abundant perennial plant found throughout North America. Many insect species depend on milkweed for food resources, protection, and reproductive benefits, including aphids, longhorn beetles, and monarch butterflies. Through these interactions, many species benefit greatly from their associations with milkweed, but the converse impact is rarely quantified. The purpose of this research is to specifically assess the impact of herbivory, particularly due to leaf aphids, on common milkweed and address whether or not plant genotype has a resulting impact.
