Herbivory on Pitcher's thistle, Cirsium pitcheri

Project Overview
Project Abstract:
The herbivorous thistle tortoise beetle, Cassida rubiginosa (Chrysomelidae, Coleoptera), was first observed on Pitcher’s thistle at Cross Village Township Park in 2014. This project will investigate the distribution of this beetle at various sites on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Information will be collected on beetle densities as a function of plant size, distance from shore, and a number of other factors. Feeding and oviposition choice experiments will be performed in the laboratory offering tortoise beetles choices between Cirsium pitcher, C. arvense, and Centaurea stoebe.
